I've been reading your blog for a while know, but I had no idea you were involved in this! A friend of mine (Sharon over at Library Hungry) is volunteering at the storefront library once a week. It sounds like a great project—I wish I could have been involved, too!

A few months ago, with the consent of the City Parks Department and the Turnpike Authority, and in partnership with a local community group, we applied for a grant from a private funding source to make improvements to the park/playground, with a focus on new plantings in existing beds. Unfortunately, we didn't get the grant. The park continues to deteriorate. The bricks are slowly being removed/dislodged from the plaza and many are scattered around the park. We'll take some new photos and post soon.

Did a little guerrilla gardening meself..scattered donated flower seeds across the hard dirt in the park -like lot and blew some into the grassy vacant lot. Going to check this week. Cycle of rain, sun = maybe, just maybe, something's sprouting?

Thanks for the brilliant idea!

What a great idea - urban Guerilla gardening! I have some flower seeds a friend sent from another garden. Should I add them to the mix?

I placed a letter in the 7/20 Sunday Globe on this matter. I also wrote a letter to the Conservancy on their website (no response from them).

What's clear to me is that the leadership (Conservancy and MTA) are more focused on budgets, infrastructure, and control issues and less on actual human needs and pleasures, like the farmer's market. Why spend millions of dollars on plazas and landscaping and fountains for tourists, without budgeting the small amount of money that would be required to operate a farmer's market. Where are the priorities? Lack of vision, lack of leadership. Its just a shame.
